Marengo is a city with a long history and was once the site of the only schoolhouse designed by architect, Lewis Sullivan. Settled in the 1830s Marengo is home to over one hundred years of history. Originally the land was bought from the Potawatomi tribe in 1832 and the area was referred to as Pleasant Grove or Jefferson. The city officially became Marengo in 1835.
