About Aurora, Illinois.

Aurora, Illinois

Aurora, which means dawn, is the second largest city in Illinois. It has a population of 171,782 residents (2008 est). Its nickname is The City of Lights. It claimed this nickname because in 1881 it was one of the first communities to move to all-electric forms of street lighting.

Aurora offers a variety of cultural and entertainment options for residents and visitors. There are eight museums or historical societies located in Aurora, as well as a zoo, and numerous significant architectural landmarks. In downtown Aurora, the Paramount Arts Center is one of the largest live performance venues outside of the Chicago area. The Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple, located on the north side of Aurora, is a destination site for Hindu’s from throughout the Midwest.

While most of Aurora is in Kane County, its city limits cover portions of four counties, Kane, DuPage, Kendall, and Will. The downtown is entirely in Kane County and about 100,000 of the city's residents reside in Kane County. The DuPage portion of Aurora has a population of about 60,000. Will and Kendall County together only account for a few thousand of Aurora's residents.
